EAL support

At Thongsley Fields we are proud of our diversity and the way in which we celebrate and embrace it. Currently we have 19 different languages spoken in school by our very gifted bilingual children. Our EAL percentage sits at 37.4% for the school. In response to this high percentage we are very lucky two have to dedicated, highly passionate EAL TA's Mrs Cutbush and Miss Rudd. They work across the school with all children who have English as their second, or in some cases, third language.

The work undertaken by the EAL TA's is split into two roles; New arrivals and Advanced learners. The way we support the children and their families can be wide ranging from helping 'new arrivals' to settle into school life and access the curriculum at a level that suits their individual needs to working in class with the 'advanced EAL' leaners and extending them to ensure they reach their potential.

We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of CREDS (Cambridge Race Equality and Diversity Support) https://www.learntogether.org.uk/services/creds/Pages/Welcome.aspx and their Bilingual Support Communication Officers (BSCO) who come into school weekly to help the children, their families and staff.

Several times a year we hold school events designed to celebrate our diversity. Our most famous one is the International Food Festival which is held in the summer term. Each class decides on a country/language to celebrate and spends time researching them before preparing a feast in the hall for everyone to share. We always welcome donations of food from parents who wish to share their cultural delights with everyone.
