A Day in the Life of Reception

It’s 8.50am and we are welcomed into our classroom. We change our home reading books by ourselves and write our names before sitting down to the register. We usually go straight into Phonics which is pacey and fun. During the morning we have free access to enhanced provision which means we can choose, play and then put things away both inside and out. We have rolling snack (fruit and milk) to encourage self-awareness, though sometimes we all sit down together and enjoy the time to socialise. We understand that we may be called to join in a guided group or to read to a grown up for a short time span.

On Monday and Tuesday we go to assembly so that we can join in with celebrations and singing. All of our learning is done through play so it’s always relevant and of interest to us! We don’t join the rest of lower school for playtime as we are already busy playing.

It’s 12.00 and we’re feeling hungry so after we wash our hands we go lunch. We go to the dining hall a little earlier than the rest of the school as we’re still getting used to the routine and to making lunch choices. After we’ve had our healthy lunch we join the rest of Key Stage 1 in the playground.

We come back into class at 1.15 where we sit down to the register and we have daily number time. Once again the classroom door is open and we’re able to choose between playing inside or outside. Lots of us like to pop in and out and we know that we’re allowed. Our wellies go on if it’s a rainy day and we know we’re always likely to get a bit mucky (whether it’s from creating a delicious pie in the mud kitchen or exploring the Forest School).

At 2.45 we have a great big tidy up to make sure our classroom is tidy for the Classroom Fairy to do her nightly checks! We gather our own coats and book bags together and take charge or our own belongings. Our teacher tells us a story and we have some songs before being collected by our parents and carers at 3.15. We’re so tired after a busy and purposeful day of play, but looking forward to finding out what tomorrow brings!
