Our Curriculum

Our Curriculum
The National Curriculum https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum sets out what children should be taught. The new national curriculum programmes of study set out what pupils should be taught by the end of each key stage and in each of the subject area. Children in their Nursery and Reception years follow the Early Years Foundation Stage https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2. More information on our Foundation stage can be found on the Early Years section of the website.

Our Curriculum Statement
At Thongsley Fields Primary School we aim to provide the children with a curriculum which is broad, well balanced and above all stimulates the children to learn. In addition to acquiring skills and knowledge, we aim to help the children to grow in confidence and maturity so that they can enter secondary school, and later adulthood, with the ability to pursue, wholeheartedly, academic social and cultural activities.

We deliver programmes of study that meet the National Curriculum requirements issued by the DfE. This National Curriculum comprises of three core subjects:
English, Mathematics, Science and foundation subjects:
History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education (PE), Computing, Religious Education and MFL (Modern Foreign Languages)
The teaching of Religious Education is statutory in all schools. It is taught as a subject outside the National Curriculum. At Thongsley Fields we follow the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus 2013.

In Key Stage 1 we primarily use Letters and Sounds . In Reception we also use Jolly Phonics
We use a range of different schemes in Key Stage 2, including Oxford Reading Tree. This ensures that children are reading a large range of different texts.
All the reading books are colour banded so children are able to read books at the correct level and challenge themselves by reading higher level books.

At Thongsley Fields Primary and Nursery School we place great emphasis on English and Maths as these underpin many of the other aspects of the taught curriculum. In Key Stage One we use letters and sounds for our teaching of phonics. We use a variety of benchmarked texts with Oxford Reading Tree as the predominant Reading Scheme.
Whilst the core subjects are taught on a regular basis, the foundation subjects may be taught as blocks of work over a matter of weeks. We call this approach Linked Up Learning, using the curriculum to show the children how subjects overlap and interweave.

When we plan our curriculum it is based around a rolling programme to ensure that topics are covered by all children who progress through the school. The rolling programmes for all phases make use of our local environment. We also study other localities so that children gain an understanding of Britain as a diverse society.

This programme is regularly reviewed to ensure compatibility with new directives or to make necessary improvements to the existing programme of work.

At Thongsley Fields Primary and Nursery School we are looking to create opportunities for children to experience and master a range of activities that enhance and extend the National Curriculum. Children have opportunities both inside and outside the classroom eg 'Forest Schools' sessions, phase visits to enhance in school learning, residential trips, curriculum workshops, a variety of sporting events, primary steps to work opportunities and whole school shared trips. We also have strong extra curricular P.E. provision.

When children leave Thongsley Fields Primary and Nursery School at the end of Year 6, they should be equipped with the full range of skills that enables them to become lifelong learners.
